The edges of a fabric, the selvedge, always gets cut while making a product. At export houses tonnes of this waste in many colours gets collected, especially at the production factory. The following patterns were designed to weave these strips into fabric, as they are pre-cut, it is quite easy. Through the Manthan Educational Society, Ahmedabad, I got in touch with a master weaver in the village of Surendranagar, Gujrat. He expertly wove the first few samples for us in a two shaft handloom. The fabrics are first segregated colour wise, and then rolled up into reels ready to be inserted as wefts. A set of cushions were stitched using the woven fabric, completing the circle of this satisfying exercise.
